Laundry Need-to-Knows: Bleach, Irons, Yoga Blankets

Laundering yoga blankets, washing clothes with bleach, and efficient ironing do not come with textbook instructions. That is why it is important to have some tricks of the trade when embarking on any of these tasks. Here are some tips that have proven to be successful when dealing with bleach, irons and yoga blankets.

A common practice when washing whites is to use bleach. These common in many different varieties. However, there is a need to be specific. For instance, chlorine bleach is something that can cause damage. Most clothes, linens, and blankets will have tags that specify the recommended washing procedure, and many will warn against using chlorine bleach. If that is the case, make sure to use a non-chlorine bleach. You can test the bleach by mixing a little with water and applying it to the garment. That will be the telling sign as to what the bleach will do to the garment. For cottons, a non-chlorine bleach is recommended during a hot water wash.

Ironing clothes is pretty self-explanatory, although there are ways to ensure your iron is operating efficiently. When using your iron, use tap water and drain it regularly. Distilled water should only be used when a certain iron calls for it. This will ensure maximum efficiency. It is also a good idea to keep your iron at least a quarter filled with water. In order to keep the surface of the iron clean, use a slightly damp cloth to remove any leftover residue. Each iron will have instructions for proper care and referring to those manufacturer guidelines can keep your iron working well and make it last for years.

Yoga Blankets & Mats

With the rise in popularity of yoga, there is a greater demand for the proper ways to wash yoga blankets. There are different varieties as some yoga blankets are made of cotton and others are comprised of wool. Both of these varieties can be laundered the same way. It is best to hand wash these blankets, although they can be used in washing machines that have a setting for delicates. This is a gentle way of washing the blankets and can be used in conjunction with a mild detergent. Avoid drying the blankets with heat once the wash cycle has completed. Yoga blankets should be hung up and allowed to air dry. Remember that any heat will shrink the blanket.
